Catching up with Barnwell
Syracuse lacks depth at the tight end spot, but there is one other position that is close to being in the same situation. Defensive end at Syracuse has a few upper class players, but not many new prospects. One player that could help them with depth is Poncho Barnwell from Rochester (NY) East High School.
Barnwell, 6-foot-4, 220 pounds does not yet have a Syracuse offer, but the Orange are taking a look at him.
"Syracuse has not offered. They have told me that they are very interest, but right now we have not talked about an offer."
Even though the Orange have not offered the Empire State product he likes them and a couple items they provide.
"I think they are a very good school with a lot to offer. They have a lot to offer with their football and academics."
This past winter Barnwell did make it up to Syracuse for their junior day and he liked what he saw.
"It was a nice place, it was a nice environment, and I could see myself in it," Barnwell said. "The Carrier Dome was really packed and it can get live when they get all the fans going."
One item that stuck out to the prospect was how the football players were treated.
"The way people treat you and the fan support really stuck out to me. They care about you more than just a football player, but they care about you as a person."
Since he does not have an offer at this time Barnwell will look to the summer for a chance to show the Orange coaches what he can do on the field.
"I plan on going back to Syracuse this summer for one of their football camps."
Besides Syracuse there are schools like Akron, Bowling Green, Buffalo, Connecticut, Duke and Rutgers taking a look at the defensive end. One of those schools has offered also offered Barnwell.
"I think the Akron offer is a good offer and I am very proud of that. I am going to wait for the time being and see what other schools are going to do. I think it is good for me to have an offer because other schools can see that and hopefully offer me."
With only one offer in and looking for more Barnwell is in no rush to end his recruitment.
"I have not thought about when I will make my decision. I am going to have to talk with my parents and coaches before I do anything like that."
