PSU drops in on VA wide receiver
Williamsburg (Va.) Lafayette wide receiver Thomas Smith isn't your typical recruit. Born in Richmond, Va., Smith has spent most of his life bouncing from school to school every few years. Living in Texas, Pennsylvania, Virginia and even Korea, Smith was never blessed with the opportunity to build stable, long-term relationships with teammates and coaches, but admits, he's OK with it.
"My dad is a captain in the Army," said Smith. "He specializes in logistics and he's actually fighting right now near Kandahar, Afghanistan. I actually went to Rustin last year in West Chester. I'm good friends with Nash."
The "Nash" Smith is referring to is 2012 Bayard Rustin wide receiver Anthony Nash, who, just like Smith, is being recruited by Penn State. So far, neither Smith nor Nash have an offer, but Smith did say the Nittany Lions recently up'd their interest.
"It was Bill Kenney, he came by school today," Smith said late last week. "Today was the first time I met him, I didn't even know he was coming in. I asked my Athletic Director to contact Penn State for me last month and I guess he did.
"We didn't talk that much, not at all. We just said hello, introduced ourselves, talked for a minute or two and that was about it."
Smith is yet to earn a scholarship from any Division I school, but he knows he could have the opportunity to earn one if he can attend the Penn State rising senior's camp this June.
"If they invite me, I'll most likely get up there this summer. I was going to email coach Kenney about camp, or anyone about it. I want to see if they can send me some camp forms and go from there. If I get any information on that, I'd be willing to go there."
Smith visited Old Dominion two weeks ago and plans on attending the Virginia Tech and Virginia summer camps. As for any immediate offers, he thinks all three of those schools are beginning to get serious.
"I haven't gotten any offers confirmed, but a couple of the Virginia schools, Tech, UVA and Old Dominion, have been talking to me about it. ODU is supposedly planning to offer me. That's what the coaches told me on Facebook.
"All the coaches have been saying that they're watching my film, breaking me down and making their notes. Hopefully someone likes what they see soon."
Smith has also met coaches from Maryland, Wake Forest and JMU.
