Hokies strike with surprise commit
Virginia Tech's recruiting haul saw a new addition on Monday night. The latest pickup is a bit of a surprise for the Hokies. Find out all the details inside.
"I actually just got off the phone with Coach (Shane) Beamer," Exton (Pa.) Downingtown East offensive guard Jack Willenbrock said. "I just called him and said I made my decision and wanted to play for Virginia Tech.
"I think he was very happy, he treated me like one of the guys. He was excited, very excited to have me."
Holding an offer from the Hokies for nearly a month, Willenbrock just visited Tech last week, what made him pull the trigger?
"I think it was just the fact I talked to my family and everything put together, it ends up being the best decision," he said. "I was very impressed with everything I saw, everything was great on my visit. Plus, it's one of the best programs in the nation."
For the 6-foot-4, 250-pounder a variety of factors played into his choice.
"It was just the overall thing altogether, it seemed right, the whole program itself," he said. "My parents really liked it and they're behind my decision, they are happy for me.
"All the coaches seemed really solid and I only heard good things. Obviously, they know what they are doing and Coach Beamer was the guy that recruited me. I like him a lot, he's a nice guy and I think he's real honest and a pretty straight forward guy."
Willenbrock touched on Frank Beamer as well.
"I mean, first of all it's cool to have such a great coach, he's kind of a legend, so there's that," he said. "Obviously, he's a great guy and it was good to get to meet him. Everything he had to say was real positive."
Was there anything else that stuck out about Tech?
"I'm just excited to be a Hokie."
In terms of his potential, Virginia Tech is looking for Willenbrock to play guard.
"They are losing four seniors after this year and they gotta get some linemen."
Willenbrock added that he plans to make more return visits to campus down the line.
"I plan to get down there a few more times to get acquainted," he said. "I haven't talked with Coach Stinespring and Newsome, that's another reason I want to get back down there to get to know them."
Of course, the question will be asked; if more offers come will he open up?
"I'm not going to open up, I'm committed and I'm sticking with my decision," he said. "It's the same way for Virginia Tech, if I commit that's where I'm headed."
Willenbrock's choice shouldn't hurt Virginia Tech with fellow offeree, running back Drew Harris.
"I'm talking to him and I'd love to play with him again, but at the same time, as a teammate, he's got to make the right decision for himself. If that is Virginia Tech, that's certainly awesome."
