Offer for Juco safety
Jon Kirby
GoWyoGo.com The Kansas coaching staff has been taking a long look at Isaiah Johnson from Iowa Western Community College. It appears they have seen enough film to form an opinion.
On Monday Johnson picked up an offer from the Jayhawks.
"I have been talking to coach Buddy Wyatt and he told me they were offering," Johnson said. "He said they have been looking at my film and liked it."
Wyatt is the lead recruiter for the area and lately Kansas defensive backs Clint Bowen has become involved in the process.
"I really like coach Wyatt and Bowen," Johnson said. "When I was talking to coach Bowen he told me he's been coaching defensive backs for 12 years. Some of the players he has coached have gone on to the NFL. He said he liked my film."
Johnson said he was scheduled to speak with Charlie Weis on Wednesday evening.
He will take official visits to Wyoming on Nov. 24 and Kansas, Dec. 7. He has also been hearing from UCLA and Arizona State.
Johnson played high school football in North Carolina. He found out about Iowa Western when a friend of his showed his highlight film to the staff. As a high school senior he was considering UConn and Arizona State. He signed with Western Carolina before finding a home at Iowa Western.
Two weeks ago he was named the NJCAA National Defensive Player of the Week.
"It felt and it was a big honor," he said. "I was really excited about it."
Johnson will graduate in May so he will sign with a school on February. He wants to take a couple visits before he makes a decision.
"Education is important so that is one thing I will look at ," Johnson said about choosing a school. "I am looking at what kind of atmosphere is around the football program and the coaching staff. I want to find a school I can go to and make an immediate impact."
