Gators, Buckeyes lead for top junior
Orlando (Fla.) Edgewater offensive lineman Michael Brewster figures to be one of the most highly-recruited prospects at his position in the state of Florida for the class of 2008 and two teams have emerged as early favorites.
"Florida and Ohio State," Brewster said. "They are definitely my top two."
Colleges were able to offer juniors scholarships in writing starting last Friday and the Gators and Buckeyes were the first two to extend a free ride to the 6-foot-6, 282-pounder.
Brewster recently picked up an additional scholarship offer from Miami (Fla.).
"Tennessee, Florida State and Michigan all said in the summer that they were going to," Brewster said. "Tennessee said that they would be sending a fax to the school, so I will have to check on that."
Brewster cites the early relationship that he has built with the coaching staffs at Florida and Ohio State as a big reason why the Gators and Buckeyes have the early lead.
"My recruiting coach for Florida is (Gators co-defensive coordinator and assistant head coach) Charlie Strong," Brewster said. "He's a class-act guy. He can really relate to kids and is easy to talk to.
The coach at Florida I really talk to the most, though, is (head coach) Urban Meyer. Coach Meyer sends me a text message almost every day and I talk to him every week. He tells me to call him every night before I have a game."
Brewster has the same sort of relationship with the Ohio State coaches.
