June 30, 2011During the summer offseason, North Pike (Miss.) High School's Vernon Butler has managed to also keep an eye on the upcoming fall season. So while the 2012 defensive lineman prospects is giving his best effort at summer camps, he is also preparing for his senior season on the defensive line.
"It's been a lot of fun this summer and a very good experience," said the 6-foot-4 and 240-pound Butler. "I am picking up some good techniques and some good D-line techniques. All of that will help me be a better player in the fall and that is what the summer is supposed to be all about."
So far this month, Butler has camped at Mississippi State and Louisiana-Lafayette.
"I went to ULL's camp last Thursday and it went good," said Butler, who had 98 tackles and four sacks last year. "They told me I did well and confirmed that I had an offer from them. I like their coaches a lot and I got a lot of good coaching at camp."
And Butler noted of other camps arriving next month.
"We are supposed to go to Southern Miss and LSU next month," said Butler. "I am also going back to Mississippi State for the Big Dawg Camp and then I am going to Ole Miss' camp, too."
Butler also owns offers from Mississippi State, Ole Miss and Memphis. Since his MSU camp visit early this month, Butler said he has maintained contact with the coaching staff.
And like most of his recruitment, the Bulldogs are still on top of his favorites' list.
"It's going good with Mississippi State," said Butler. "I keep up with them a good bit and they are still talking pretty good to me. They are recruiting me as a defensive tackle and that is good with me. I played defensive tackle for half of the season last year so it's not a major adjustment.
"And they are still the main one sticking out to me and pretty much the main one I am looking at."
