Trey Washington Signs with Wyoming
Trey Washington signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Cowboys and head coach Larry Shyatt. Washington will start his UW career during the 2013-14 academic year, as the Cowboys have one scholarship left for the late signing period.Laramie, Wyo. "We had an opportunity to see Trey last summer with the [AAU] Dallas Mustangs and were inspired with his game," Shyatt said. "Each coach then saw Trey play this fall and returned with more praise from what we found out about him and his family on and off the court."
A 5'11", 170-pound guard, Washington has excelled under the leadership of coach Patrick Washington at Woodrow Wilson High School in Dallas, Texas. As a junior in 2011-12, Washington averaged 14.5 points, three assists and 2.1 steals per game while pacing the Wildcats to a 27-4 overall record. He notched seven games with more than 20 points, including a season-high 31 points in mid-February.
"He scored well as a junior in a very difficult Dallas league and seemingly is comfortable running the point position as well as scoring from deep," Shyatt said. "We got a good one and we really need him to progress for us in his first year."
Washington helped his team craft an 11-1 mark in conference play en route to a district title and appearance in the Class 4A state tournament semifinals. Along the way he was named the Most Valuable Offensive player in his district. Washington posted 28 points, three assists and three steals in Wilson's 2012-13 season opener last Tuesday.
Washington joins 6'6" forward Keonta Vernon of Tulare, Calif., and 6'8" forward Alan Herndon of Colorado Springs, Colo., who signed with the Cowboys last Wednesday.
