Sobey Commits to Wyoming Basketball

The Wyoming basketball program received good news on Monday when 6-foot-3 and 190 pound guard Nathan Sobey committed to Larry Shyatt and the Cowboys.

Sobey will bring the Pokes potential scoring punch on the perimeter and added depth entering 2012-13.

Guards Paco Cruz, Arthur Bouedo, and point man Jaydee Luster are graduating and with some youth still developing in the underclassmen ranks, Shyatt's staff needed some instant maturing in the backcourt.

Sobey visited Laramie last weekend following a trip to Weber State. He narrowed his choices down to the Cowboys and Wildcats.

"Nathan really liked head coach Larry Shyatt," said Cochise head coach Jerry Carillo to JucoJunction.com early today. "The Cowboys did a good job of recruiting him."

Sobey averaged 16.5 points a game, while pulling down an impressive 6.9 rebounds per game from his backcourt position. He shot 48% from the floor during his sophomore campaign for Cochise College.

The Australia native should lend the Cowboys better athleticism on the perimeter and more scoring versatility to the floor with his sneaky athleticism and decent quickness off penetration. He scored 693 points in 56 games during two seasons for the Apache.

The Pokes return sharpshooter Luke Martinez on the opposite wing, along with interior players Leonard Washington and Larry Nance, Jr. Backup point guard Derrious Gilmore will return for his senior season.

The late signing period will begin on April 11th, the first day Sobey can sign and continue through the middle of May.

Shyatt still has two remaining scholarships to-date and could focus on adding one more wing player and an interior player to the mix.

When Sobey signs next week, it will give UW's 2012 class five players with two more likely on the way. Juco transfer center Matt Sellers enrolled at UW in January and will be eligible this upcoming season.
