Hokies have ties, offer emerging 2012 WR

The Hokies have extended a select number of verbal offers to date for the 2012 recruiting class. Just as they do every year, Tech is starting to develop ties at schools where they have a connection including with one versatile wideout.

"I'd say I know for sure about five or six offers," Plant City, Fla. 2012 athlete LaMarlin Wiggins said. "I have verbal offers from South Florida, Auburn, Southern Cal, UCLA, Virginia Tech and Texas Tech. My cousin is assistant coach Chad Scott at Texas Tech."

Wiggins claims a number of big offers to date, what is his take of the interest already?

"They are all pretty good," he said. "I've been researching the schools when I have time.

"I was very impressed by the offer from Southern Cal, it is a little far from home for me."

According to Wiggins, he's impressed with his other offers too.

"I really like Texas Tech and South Florida," he said. "I like how South Florida turned their program around. I like Auburn and Virginia Tech is pretty nice too.

"I don't know as much about Texas Tech and Auburn, but South Florida is close to home. I've heard good things about their program and they send players to the NFL. I'd be one of their top recruits if I went there and I know they love me. I also have family that lives in the Tampa area, my grandma, father and uncles. I am planning to go to one of their games when they play Pittsburgh (November 20th)."

Meanwhile, the Hokies have ties due to new head coach and former Hokie player Wayne Ward.

"Coach Ward has told me a bit about Virginia Tech," he said. "He mentioned how they are really big in the weight room and they work hard in the weight room and push it. I like that, I'm a weight room guy."

Outside of the scholarships, Wiggins is a fan of Miami as well.

"I'm a big fan of Miami," he said. "They've been in touch with me and are trying to get some film. I plan to go there on November 27th when they play South Florida."

With lots of interest already and numerous offers, Wiggins reflected on what he is looking for in a school.

"I want a team that's good and where I can go and play. I don't want to be a redshirt freshman," he said. "I'm going to watch and see how many seniors teams have.

"I also want my family to be able to watch me play."

Wiggins is cousins with star 2012 quarterback Bennie Coney. Do the two want to play together at the next level?

"We've been talking about it," he said. "That is really big though cause we grew up all our lives together and have only played on different teams for one year in 17-years."

The 6-foot-3, 195-pounder posted 37 receptions for 385-yards and three touchdowns as he helped Plant City to a 7-3 record as a sophomore.

"We did great last year," he said. "I did well too. I'm quicker, faster and stronger this season. I'm starting to block even better. I think I'm a very good blocker at wide receiver."
