'UW always his No. 1 choice'
When Michael Deiter arrived on campus for Wisconsin's spring game in April, he wasn't a household name for those who follow recruiting in the Midwest.
"We did that by design," Tim Spiess told BadgerBlitz.com on Monday evening.
Spiess, who serves as Deiter's head coach at Genoa High School in Ohio, wanted to shield his prized offensive lineman from the "circus" that is recruiting for high-mjaor prospects.
"We had outstanding running back, one of the best recruits during my career and I thought the system used him and I didn't want that to happen to Michael," Spiess said. "So what he did, we targeted five schools that Michael could have a success at. We targeted two local schools, Bowling Green and Toledo. We have great working relationships with those schools and both campuses are less than 20 minutes from our high school. Those two programs also have two of the best young head coaches in college football, in my opinion.
