The dead period is upon us, but that hasn't stopped the recruiting news around the ACC. Four programs attempt to maintain status quo with new head coaches. While North Carolina's new boss Butch Davis is making his presence felt in his former stomping grounds, its Randy Shannon who picked up the biggest commitment of the week.

With Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator Jeff Jagodzinski hired as the new Boston College head coach, look for most of the current Boston College class to remain intact. Jagodzinski comes from the NFL, has a very good résumé when it comes to offensive linemen and has been an offensive coordinator on every level. If he keeps defensive assistants Bill McGovern and Frank Spaziani, that should be enough to keep most everything together. Almost every recruit contacted since the hiring of Jagodzinski was excited.

Five-star wide receiver Dwight Jones has set his four official visits. The big wideout will head to North Carolina on Jan. 5, Tennessee on Jan. 12, Clemson on Jan. 19 and Florida on Jan. 26. Jones is a soft verbal commitment to North Carolina, but has forged a solid relationship with Clemson commitment Marcus Gilchrist and his recruiting coach Billy Napier…Clemson lost out on two targets last week when cornerback Larry Asante committed to Nebraska and defensive tackle Olufemi Ajiboye chose South Carolina.

With 20 commitments, there are only a few scholarships left for the 2007 class. One of the players they'd like to land is Texas cornerback Randez James. James lists Duke as his favorite after a recent visit to Tulsa, but he wants to visit Purdue before making a decision. Duke wouldn't mind adding one more offensive line commitment if they can steal Florida tackle Elvis Fisher from Missouri and South Florida.

It's a four-team race for defensive tackle John Brown from Lakeland. The Seminoles and Gators are seemingly the teams to beat. Florida has six Dreadnaughts currently committed and would like to make Brown No. 7. Brown's best friend, Kendrick Stewart, is currently at FSU. Brown has long been linked to the Seminoles, so Florida State is in excellent shape heading into visits. … The offensive line remains the biggest area of need for FSU, and the 'Noles are working hard to pull away two players currently committed to other teams. Louisiana lineman Rishaw Johnson looks like he'll either stick with Ole Miss or switch to FSU. Former FSU commitment Antwane Greenlee, who is now committed to Georgia, recently took an unofficial visit.

Georgia Tech has already received its first commitment for 2008. McDonough (Ga.) Henry County wideout Chris Jackson pledged to Chan Gailey last week. Jackson is a good-looking receiver with excellent quickness. He also had an early offer from Tennessee. … Athlete Morgan Burnett doesn't like to name leaders, but word has it that the Jackets will be very tough to beat down the stretch. The Rivals100 standout still has visits left with Florida and Auburn, but it's doubtful that Gailey and company will have to wait that long to receive a commitment.

USC transfer Antwine Perez looks like he'll land at Maryland. He is as valuable as any recruit this year - short of Marvin Austin. Perez will have to sit out a year but will still have three years to play. Perez was a Rivals100 member in the class of 2006. He enrolled early at Southern Cal, played sparingly this season and decided he wanted to be back on the east coast….The Terps continue to stay in the battle for Austin, Rob Gronkowski, John Elliott, Tony Tucker and a few others. However, the only one they lead for currently is tight end/linebacker Devonte Campbell. However, a surprise or two down the stretch wouldn't be a shocker.

New head coach Tom O'Brien has been in contact with nearly all of the current N.C. State commitments - as well as a few players he received pledges from at Boston College. Offensive lineman Arthur Ray Jr and tight end Lars Anderson, both former BC commits, will likely be visiting in early January. … It looks like the entire offensive staff of the Eagles will be joining O'Brien at N.C. State while some of the defensive coaches could stay at BC. Among those heading to Raleigh is recruiting coordinator Jerry Petercuskie, who has quietly done an exceptional job gathering the current talent at BC.

Defensive end Tony Tucker is down to four schools and wants to decide right after the New Year. Tucker said he's down to Maryland, Pitt, Clemson and Virginia Tech, but sources indicate it will come down to Pitt and Virginia Tech. Tucker loved his visit to Pitt so much that the Panthers could be the team to beat….Virginia Beach (Va.) Salem defensive lineman Chimaeze Okoli had a solid senior year and looks to favor Michigan State and Virginia Tech. He has an official visit set to Tech on Jan. 19. The stock of defensive end Weslye Saunders is on the rise since his impressive performance at the Shrine Bowl. Wake Forest is still in the mix, but it seems that Saunders is favoring North Carolina and South Carolina heading into January. Florida State is also making a strong charge. … The success of Wake Forest this year is clearly bringing in a higher level of athlete on official and unofficial visits. Wake is already one of the fastest teams in the ACC, and this year's class will make them that much quicker.
