Thomas visits Big Ten

With the likes of Aldine, Eisenhower and Stratford grabbing the headlines in District 19-5A in Houston, one of the city's biggest surprises has been Aldine Nimitz, led by three-star athlete Michael Thomas.

The north Houston district is loaded with major Division I athletes in Andrew Luck, Darron Thomas, Daniel Campbell, Rod Davis and Craig Loston, but Thomas is making a strong case for the district's most valuable player.

"He's just an overall team leader," Nimitz coach David Suggs said. "He works hard, he prepares well and he leads by example."

Nimitz is 3-0 with Thomas at quarterback with wins over Elsik, Clear Brook and Port Arthur Memorial.

Thomas is also an academic standout as well. Last weekend, the 5-foot-11 athlete officially visited Northwestern and came away impressed.

"The visit was great," Thomas said. "We learned what we needed about the school and it is a great campus. Now, they lost against Duke, which wasn't too great."

Thomas has narrowed his favorites to seven which includes Stanford, Northwestern, Boise State, Penn State, Nebraska, Iowa State and Missouri.

"It's going to come down to what a school can offer academically," Suggs said. "That will be his biggest factor."

Thomas is the 55th ranked athlete by Rivals.com and is No. 88 in the Texas Top 100.
