CROWLEY - After what the Everman coaching staff would describe as an embarrassing performance in its cancelled game against Waco Midway, it was clear to see the Bulldogs were ready to get back on the field and redeem themselves. Consider it mission accomplished for Everman as the Bulldogs (2-1,1-0) defense put together a dominating performance in a 35-14 win over the Crowley Eagles (1-3, 0-1).
The Everman defense for three quarters held the potent Crowley ground attack to negative rushing yards, while the offense showed signs of life for the first time in 2011.
Devynn Birdow threw three touchdown passes to lead a surprisingly balanced Everman offense.
Everman jumped out to a 7-0 lead on the game's opening drive as Birdow connected with Lincoln Richard for a 21-yard touchdown pass. Everman took advantage of a short field as Crowley went a failed onside kick attempt.
The Bulldogs would put together another methodical drive early in the second quarter, but a 35-yard field goal was just wide left and the Bulldogs lead was just 7-0 in the second quarter.
The Everman defense held up its end of the bargain however, as the Crowley offense didn't generate a first down until midway through the second quarter.
With just four seconds remaining in the first half, Everman would extend the lead to 13-0 as Pat Small would get behind the Crowley secondary for a 34-yard strike from Birdow.
The fourth quarter saw Everman's running game take over as junior running back Zach Cowanscored on an eight-yard run and senior running back Devin Walker scored from 73 yards out.
The Crowley offense, which previously had put up some big numbers on the ground, was held in check by the aggressive Everman defense as after three quarters Crowley had negative yards on the ground. Despite a fourth quarter surge, Crowley ended with just 47 yards on the ground.
Larry Cheeks scored on an eight yard run with little more than two minutes left to put Crowley on the board at 35-7 and after an onside kick, Crowley would add another score on a three yard pass from Sean Flynn to Floyd Rogers for the final tally of 35-14 Everman.
Everman will continue 7-4A play next week with a Thursday night game against Arlington Seguin at Wilemon Field, while Crowley will play a road game against Mansfield Summit.
