Three-star OL picks WKU

All he needed was one visit to Bowling Green to make up his mind.

Junior college lineman Connor Popeck is the latest recruit to join the Hilltoppers Class of 2013, committing shortly after his official visit to campus last weekend, Nov. 10.

The three-star lineman said he felt like WKU was the perfect place for him.

"I hung out with the guys, got to meet the coaches last weekend," Popeck said, "I liked all of em'.

"I want to be an agriculture major and I know they have a good program there for that. Just the coaches, the facilities, I liked all of it. It was kindof a no-brainer for me."

The Itawamba Community College standout said his relationship with WKU assistant coach Alonzo Hampton was one of his biggest reasons for choosing the Hilltoppers.

"He (Hampton) is awesome," Popeck said. "He was the first coach to ever recruit me that also called my parents."

"That really helped a lot. All-around he was a real nice guy, I trust him."

A 6-foot-4, 280 pound prospect, Popeck will make a return trip to Bowling Green in just a few weeks.

But unlike last weekend's official visit, this time it's for good.

Popeck starts classes at WKU in the spring semester, after graduating from Itawamba C.C in December.

"I'm gona try to get a head start these next couple of weeks," he said. "Get in good shape, get ready for spring so I can try to contribute as early as I can."

The three-star lineman said WKU head coach Willie Taggart was excited to hear about his commitment.

"He was excited, he said 'that's awesome'," Popeck said. "He said we're going to be running the football a lot, time to get ready to work hard."

He said his mother, who lives in nearby Olive Branch, Miss., was also excited about his decision.

"I didn't actually get to tell them (his parents) till after I called Coach Taggart," Popeck said. "But she likes the place, and it's not real far from her.

"If she wants to make a game, it's close enough for her to make it to one. My dad works overseas, but he'll be able to watch the games online or on ESPN."

The three-star lineman is the No. 14 commitment in WKU's Class of 2013, pushing the Hilltoppers past Arkansas State for now in claiming the No. 2 position in the Sun Belt team recruiting rankings.
