Elite talent tops Texas state ranking

Preseason State Rankings:

There are a lot of opinions on who the top player in the state of Texas is for the class of 2010. Running back Lache Seastrunk, defensive end Jackson Jeffcoat, wide receiver Darius White and even defensive end Reggie Wilson all have plenty of support as the top player in the state. It's hard to go wrong with any of them. In fact, the group is so talented that they also are very much in consideration as the top player in the nation.

In the first edition of the Rivals.com Texas Top 100, Seastrunk gets the nod as the best in the state and with two other five-star prospects right behind him in White and Jeffcoat as well as a near five-star in Nelson, it's clear that there will be plenty of competition for that top spot and it will be another huge year for talent in the state.

Outside of the top four, there are still loads of talent with 35 prospects listed within the latest edition of the Rivals250 and 42 total four-star prospects. Near the top of the list, the big boys have made a statement. 11 of the top 20 prospects play on either the offensive or defensive line. Led by recent Texas A&M commit Jake Matthews and long-time Texas commit Trey Hopkins, both the Aggies and the Longhorns have cleaned up on highly rated Texas offensive linemen.

Among the skill athletes, Chris Jones boasts his big-play wide receiver ability at the No. 9 spot while a similarly skilled wideout in Deandrew White is not far behind at No. 11.

Rivals100 Dallas (Texas) Skyline linebacker Corey Nelson is one of five Skyline prospects to grace the list followed by four-star wide receiver and LSU commit Mike Davis, three-star Texas A&M commit Domonique Patterson, three-star Houston commit Rodney Williams and Oklahoma commit Joe Powell.

While all four teammates are among a laundry list of Skyline talent that have already committed to schools, they are not alone as commitments on the Texas Top 100 either. Before the start of their senior years, a remarkable number of players within the list have already made their college decisions. Within the top 100, less than a quarter of the players have yet to make their college decision.

Among those uncommitted players are some prospects that would make any coach happy to have. Dontae Williams debuts on the list at No. 14 thanks to a phenomenal highlight reel and some camp performances that have backed up his clips.

Towards the middle of the list Corpus Christi (Texas) Carroll safety makes a strong debut at No. 52 due to some dominating off-season performances and testing number through the roof.

While the top 100 is dominated by Big 12 commitments, the Mountain West maintains a strong presence as well. TCU commits are sprinkled throughout the list led by Cameron Fleming at No. 54 and linebacker Marcus Mallett at No. 68.

Utah is also looking to keep its recent success going with commitments from the No. 36 prospect in the state, running back Josh Huff.

The list is long and deep with talented players and as the season progresses this fall, it will only get more competitive from top to bottom.

More states: Rivals.com unveils the preseason rankings for four states in addition to Texas on Thursday. Running back Jamaal Jackson (Delaware), offensive tackle James Hurst (Indiana), athletes Justin McCay (Kansas) and Marquis Flowers (Arizona) take the preseason top spots in their respective states.

Rivals.com will continue with the preseason state ranking releases on Friday with Georgia, Idaho, New Mexico, North Carolina and Ohio.
