The Wyoming Cowboys will be renewing some old rivalries with the addition of the new MW members. In 2012 and 2013, one of Wyoming's most exciting rivalries will be restored versus the Fresno State Bulldogs. The most recent meeting in that rivalry was the 2010 New Mexico Bowl that saw the two teams battle to double overtime before the Pokes captured a 35-28 victory. Also on Wyoming's 2012 and '13 football schedules will be the Nevada Wolfpack. Wyoming and Nevada last played in 2000 in a game won by the Wolfpack by a touchdown, 35-28, in Laramie.
Future Mountain West football schedules will also feature long-time Wyoming rival Hawaii, however, there will be one conference opponent that each school does not play each season and in 2012 and 2013 Hawaii will be the opponent that Wyoming will not face. The earliest the Cowboys and Warriors would play would be 2014. Hawaii is joining the Mountain West as a football member only.
The eight-game conference football format means that each team will play four conference home games and four conference road games each season.
"The addition of the new members to the Mountain West provides our conference with a very strong membership from top to bottom," said University of Wyoming Athletics Director Tom Burman. "In terms of football, Boise State and Hawaii have both played in BCS games this past decade, and Fresno State and Nevada have built programs that have won consistently and played in bowl games on a regular basis.
"These four teams also offer us a chance at Wyoming to renew old rivalries. We are excited about the future of the Mountain West and are looking forward to building on the many successes our conference has enjoyed through its first dozen years."
While home and away opponents have been determined for the 2012 and 2013 football seasons, exact dates, times and TV coverage for games will be announced prior to each season.
The Mountain West Board of Directors also adopted an eight-game conference format for the 2014 football season. The conference rotation of opponents for the 2014 season and beyond will be determined at a later date.
