Wyoming Football continues to bulk up its future home non-conference schedule with the addition of long time rival Utah Utes of the PAC 12, a series beginning in Laramie in 2020. The Pokes will make a return trip to Salt Lake City in 2025.
UW already hosts another PAC 12 school in Oregon scheduled this season to play at War Memorial Stadium, while PAC 12 Washington State (2018), SEC Missouri (2019), and BIG 12 Texas Tech (2023) all will be in town in future years. The Cowboys play at BIG 10 Iowa this season.
The Cowboys and Utes have played 83 previous times, with the first game being played on Oct. 31, 1904. The two teams have not played since Oct. 16, 2010, the last year that both teams were members of the Mountain West Conference.
“This is a great opportunity for us to renew a traditional rivalry that goes back to the Skyline Conference, through the WAC and the Mountain West Conference,” said UW AD Tom Burman. “We’re excited for our fans, particularly in Western Wyoming."
The 83 previous games against Utah rank as the second longest series for Wyoming versus any opponent. The only longer series for the Cowboys is the “Border War” series versus Colorado State, which stands at 108 meetings.
“I’ve heard about the long history of this rivalry, and I know our fans will be thrilled to see Utah return to War Memorial Stadium,” said UW head coach Craig Bohl. “This will be an outstanding opportunity for us to play another quality PAC-12 opponent in the coming years. We look forward to the challenge as we continue to take steps forward in the development of our football program.”
Wyoming will play at ACC Clemson in 2021, at BIG 10 Illinois in 2022, and at PAC 12 Arizona State in 2024, while making return trips to Missouri (2018) and Texas Tech (2020).
